Video--Know Your Audience Before Presentations
1. Know the size and occupations of your audience...
-if small and intimate, and with the same makeup of occupation, then your anecdotes and inside jokes are going to work wonders.
'We salespeople make a living pushing people's buttons.'
-if large and professional, then you better stick with the facts and look to command authority in your talk.
'As you can see from our data...'
2. Know the biases and attitudes of your audience...
-if the audience would not be too interested in hearing about your topic, then tell them at the outset why it benefits them to listen.
'I know that you're not too interested in learning about...but let me tell you...'
-if the audience feels strongly about a topic and you can't avoid bringing it up in discussions, then try to prepare a well-rounded answer that allows room for differences in opinion.
'I know that we feel strongly about this, and I agree...but you see on the flip side...'
3. Know what motivates your audience...
-if the audience is largely a group of tech junkies, then by all means wow them with the latest gadgets and networking tools.
'We all love twitter, don't we? Then, feel free to feed me your tweets during our presentation.'
-if the audience is a group of avid fashion lovers, then by all means share and reinforce that passion.
'Fashion brings out the best in all of us. And we're here to talk about just that.'
So,do you know your audience?
